Qué harás

From Seattle, you will board the ferry to Bremerton as a foot passenger and meet me at the ferry dock in Bremerton. The timing of your experience will be based on the tides that day. I only offer this experience when the tides are very favorable during daylight.
The ferry ride across Puget Sound provides stunning views of the busy Port of Seattle, the Cascade and Olympic mountains, and Mount Rainier. It is common to see marine mammals from the ferry.
From Bremerton, I will drive you to a prime location for clams and oysters on Hood Canal . With my guidance, you will easily dig a legal limit of clams including several edible species, and usually I am able to shuck oysters for you to take home, too. I will share my favorite recipes with you. I will return you to the ferry dock in Bremerton to board a ferry back to Seattle with your bucket of clams.
(Rarely, it is necessary to cancel an experience because of water quality, in which case guests receive a full refund.)
My primary goal in hosting this experience is to promote environmental awareness, and this experience is basically a marine biology field trip. We will see so much more marine life than just clams, including oysters, crabs, shrimp, minnows, waterfowl, and coastal forest! You will learn everything you need to know to harvest clams on your own in the future. Children love this experience!
Other things to note
You will need to wear or bring knee high boots, warm clothing, and rain gear. I recommend a knapsack. I have several pairs of boots left over from my grown children which I can provide if you let me know your size. Don't forget your shellfish license.

I am a retired surgeon. A lifetime of coastal living and extensive offshore sailing have contributed to my love of the marine environment. The purchase of recreational shellfish licenses contributes importantly to the preservation of marine habitat and resources. I love seafood and I have been digging clams since childhood — on the Atlantic coast, in British Columbia, in Alaska, in New Zealand, and since 1985 in Washington State where I try not to miss any good low tide. As a young man I worked as a professional scallop fisherman. I am a volunteer in an oyster restoration project.

Dónde estarás

After your ferry ride across Puget Sound, we will meet at the ferry terminal in Bremerton, and then travel in my car for about a half hour to one of several prime clam digging locations on Hood Canal, depending upon current state regulations, and my local knowledge.

Great experience! We had a wonderful time with Dan. He's very knowledgeable and personable. We learned so much, we were excited to go back and try it on our own. We collected enough clams for a whole pot of clam chowder and pasta. Dan also shucked oysters. It was enough food for the week. Didn't get sick from anything, so that's a plus!

My family and I had an amazing time clam digging with Dan! He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced in clams and shellfish of all types. We are new to the area and Dan’s extensive and informative knowledge about the area is also very impressive. The whole experience from beginning to end is so much fun! Dan is also great with kids. He is patient, helpful, and provided everything we needed (boots, shovels, buckets, even drinks, and snacks). Tomorrow, we look forward to trying out the clam recipes Dan mentioned to us. We would definitely recommend this experience! Thank you so much for such a wonderful family outing!

We had an amazing time with Daniel. We were staying in Whidbey Island and worked out with him ahead of time to meet directly at Port Gamble, which saved us all a lot of travel time rather than travelling together from downtown Seattle ferry terminal. My wife and I really wanted to go clam digging, but we didn't have any gear (we flew in for a wedding weekend) and had no clue where to go, what we were looking for, or what was safe/not safe to eat. There are other groups in Seattle that 'teach' clam digging but their dates are very inconsistent or inconvenient. Daniel checked all the local health warnings the day before to make sure it would be safe to harvest and eat what we found. Separately, we went online to buy our shellfishing licenses for the day. He met us at the park entrance, where he brought us big rubber boots and provided shovels, buckets, and clam sizing rings (to know what was legal size vs too small). He gave us a great overview of the different types of clams, their lifecycle, how you can spot where they might be on the beach, and finally how to carefully dig them up without breaking them. He also helped us keep track of our catch limits, and while we were digging he found, shucked, and bagged oysters (which are also included in our shellfish license). We left with a 2-gallon bucket each of clams and a bag of oyster meat with a very tight lid to keep in water on our drive home. We changed the water twice overnight with salt water to get the clams to release all their grit and keep them alive, and then had our harvest 3 ways- raw (clams halfshell and sashimi style), steamed (straight + mixed with pasta), and fried oysters, which more than fed 4 people. None of us were ill and it was by far the freshest and tastiest clams I've ever had. It was a great way to spend the day, learn about the local ecosystem and where our food comes from, and have a great meal afterwards! I feel I could definitely go clamming by myself next time, but for the first time it was great to have Daniel provide all the equipment, logistics, and know-how so I could focus on enjoying the experience and digging my dinner!

This was a great experience from start to finish. From the moment we met Daniel, he was a fun and easy to be around as he enthusiastically shared his expert knowledge, enthusiasm and wisdom. That made the trip to the beach a great chance to learn about the different types of shellfish and get some insight into this beautiful part of the world. Then once we arrived he was a fabulous lead and guide. The benefits of the trip didn’t finish with the fact that we had a great time on the tour. The following day we feasted on our catch and made the best linguine alle vongole we’ve ever eaten. And the experience and knowledge we gained made us keen to go clamming on our own in the future. Ten out of Ten. Thank you so much.
