Qué harás

Let's make Japanese chopsticks using wood. Kids and people who have never worked in woodwork can also enjoy it!

1) Learn
Let's learn the features of Japanese chopsticks.
2) Shave
Let's shave the wood by using a jig and a KANNA which is the Japanese planer after wearing a cotton work glove.
Caution; please be careful of the plate on the KANNA to avoid minor injury.
3) Polish
Let's use sandpaper to smoothen the roughness.
4) Beautify
Let's give a shiny texture to our wood by putting beeswax on it which is a substance secreted by bees.
5) Design a chopsticks bag
Let's design a chopsticks bag by using a pen/Japanese writing brush/stamp. I can also customize the bag by writing your name in Japanese.

[Before using]
Dry: Please put your chopsticks in a chopsticks bag and after you arrived at your hotel/home, take out the chopsticks and let them dried naturally for more than 10 hours.
Wash: Before using the chopsticks for the first time, please wash them well using a dish-washing soap.

[After using]
- Please wash and dry them properly. In order to prolong the life of chopsticks, don't soak in the water for a long time and don't use a tableware washer machine.
- They are made of cypress so that they can be easily shaved. Please note that they are easier to break than regular chopsticks.

My name is Isseki, I live in Tokyo with my family including my daughter. We love traveling and we travel abroad once a year. Since I am highly interested in cultural diversity, let us share and exchange pieces of knowledge with each other.

In my childhood, I lived in Kanuma city in Japan which is also known as the"Carpenter city” for 13 years. Since I was a leader of an organization called the Boy Scouts there, I gained special traditional experiences as a carpenter, such as making some tableware or decorative trees. I want to share this knowledge in this experience.

As my English skill is not good yet, please ask me whenever you don't understand what I'm saying. I will do my best to create this a great memory for you.

This experience was awesome. In particular, my nine-year-old niece absorbed in designing a chopstick envelope and in chopsticks game. The whole experience was quite satisfying! I highly recommend it to everyone.

Overall enjoy this experience much more than I thought! Not only you've got to made your own hand-crafted wood chopsticks, which is easier than it looks, they're also have some background story about chopsticks history and chopsticks manners. Very interesting! The location also very easy to accessible.

Shaving a poece of wood was easy and very fun. No strong power needed, women and kids would also be able to enjoy this workshop. Japanese cypress smells very good.
