Nyon is a beautiful little city by the Leman Lake, neighboring Geneva and Gland. The city was a Roman colony created by Julius Caesar between 50 and 44 BC. The modern city center is constructed on the Roman ruins of that time and some of the ruins are discovered by time. Today, the city serves some beautiful archeological and architectural imprints to its visitors which can be viewed by very careful eyes. We will meet at the train station in Nyon and there, I will give you a map and explain our trip. We will walk to the city center (about 5-10 minutes of walk) and discover all the Roman imprints one by one. Note that some are really hard to spot as they are hidden in modern constructions. While visiting, I will explain the history of the city and the Romans in the area. I can also answer your questions about the city and Switzerland in general. After our walk, we will visit the Roman Museum. There you will see a wonderful assortment of Roman ruins found around the city. We will end our visit with a coffee/tea pause in one of the local cafes where we will find a great opportunity to chat about Switzerland and Nyon (and the area). I will also answer your questions about local life in Switzerland.
I am an architect with a master's degree from Istanbul Technical University. I have been doing my job for over 20 years and on the other hand, passionate about Roman architecture. Roman engineering was beyond their time and they constructed strong, well-designed constructions that could survive even to our times. Architecture and history are connected with unbreakable bonds and architectural history determines global history. Nyon is a city where those two aspects come together in a lovely way. Living in Nyon and experiencing the Roman imprints all around the city, forces me to want to share this experience with others as well. My father was an incentive tourism agency owner, so I grew up in a family where we hear and see about history all the time. I would like to share my architectural knowledge and experience with my guests.
