Aloha and Welcome as we gather around the information table at Sharkey's 100-year old farmhouse in the historic plantation village of Papaikou. Sample our freshly brewed 100% Hawaiian coffee or cacao tea, grown right here on the farm. From there we begin an easy walk through our orchards where you'll learn about Hawaiian coffee growth and production. Interwoven the coffee are rows of cacao trees. Depending on the time of year, you can usually see tiny flowers and large, multi-colored pods hanging from trunks and branches. Long, heavy vanilla vines grow up the cacao trees, nature's perfect trellis! We'll show you how each vanilla orchid is delicately hand-pollinated to produce long "hands" of vanilla beans. We'll then proceed to the "Slab" where the pods are 'cracked' before the fermentation process. Next we move into the greenhouse where flats of newly planted seedlings just beginning their journey grow alongside large screens filled with coffee and cacao beans slowly drying to perfection. Finally we'll move into our certified Chocolate Kitchen where the Magic happens! Who wants a taste? Free samples!

The Shark and Ana are the absolute best hosts I’ve ever encountered. We had a blast learning more about their processes, walking the property, watching the cracking of the cacao, and making chocolate. An amazing and unique experience that we’d return for—even if it was just to grab coffee, sit and chat.

Amazing Tour - Shark is a super nice and georgous guy who told us a lot about coffee, cacao and vanilla. Highly recommendation while visiting Big Island :)

Tom (AKA Shark) is very personable and a wealth of knowledge. His approach to passing this knowledge to those who take the tour is very pleasing. No attempts to be too scientific or overwhelm you with information you won’t retain. From a quick geological chat about the island to his methodology of his farming techniques, a truly memorable experience. We have already recommended this experience to our friends on the island as well as to anyone we might know that be vacationing there.

Our trip to Tom and Ana's coffee/cacao/vanilla farm was outstanding and it has been one of the most fun things we've experienced on our trip to Hawai'i. I'm an introvert and had some reservations about spending a day paired up with people we'd never met and Shark (aka Tom) made us feel right at home from the moment we parked our car and walked over to relax, enjoy some fresh coffee, pet the dog, and talk story about the farm. Shark really cares a lot about his farm, his seemingly endless number of plants, and the science and history behind chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. But it doesn't stop there, on the tour you can sample bananas from his farm, taste fresh cacao pods, smell cured vanilla beans, see bright red coffee cherries, and sample all of the great products they make right on site. I've been on a lot of tours of wineries, coffee roasters, beer breweries, and all sorts of things like that and I can say without hesitation that this was one of the most engaging and informative ones I've ever attended. In an earlier chapter of life, Shark was a grade school teacher and his patience and willingness to find ways of helping each and every person in the group understand what he's talking about was really special to experience. Over the course of a few hours, it was clear what each person in our group was interested in, and he made sure every single one of us felt like our questions were valid and that we all were welcome into their world. The tour and conversation alone was well worth the price and the time we spent today, but we also ate so many macadamia nuts, chocolate dipped cookies, fresh roasted coffee, chocolate bars, and macadamia brittle and then poured our own chocolates into molds, bagged them, and took those home too. I don't know what a bag full of artisan, dark-chocolate covered macadamia nut candies costs these days but I do know that I went home with almost 10 bags of them that we made ourselves and will share with friends and family back home. I can't help but think we came out ahead on the return-on-investment. Either way, we had a blast, met some great new friends, and learned so much on this trip. If you've got a day to spare on your Hawai'i vacation agenda and you're not afraid of being outdoors, you've gotta check this place out. Tell em Nate sent ya!

Had a lot of fun on this farm tour! Tom was very knowledgeable about coffee, chocolate, and vanilla production, as well as Big Island history. Really enjoyed chocolate making!
