With one of the highest population density in the world, Singapore's urban planners have to ensure land use is fully maximized to prevent any wastage. When Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in Singapore in 1819, he subsequently drew up a town plan to maintain some order in the development of this young but thriving port. Starting with the Singapore City Gallery, we will trace the steps of Singapore's land use from past to present, and future. Moving on, we will visit the 177-year-old Thian Hock Keng Temple which is the oldest Hokkien temple in Singapore and uncover its importance to early Chinese immigrants. We will stop by the Sri Mariamman Temple which was established in 1827, and learn of how this Hindu temple came to be built in the heart of Chinatown. We will stroll along the main hub of Chinatown, taking in the view of the beautiful shophouses, and learn of the life and the type of work of the early Chinese community. We will end at the Chinatown Complex, a food centre (locally called 'hawker centre') and find out the reason street hawkers were relocated to these centres. We will explore some local food here.
Hello I am Keith, born and bred in Singapore. I am a part time traveller, full time engineer. As a traveller, I take pleasure in exploring places where locals go to and watching people in their everyday activities. I relish the conversation with the locals, where I get to know of their culture, customs and way of life. I believe travel should be about people, not just places. Looking for a local who can show you around Singapore like a friend would? look no further. I enjoy meeting people and introducing Singapore to foreign friends, especially the non-touristy local places. i am sincere, flexible when it comes to the itinerary, and enjoys the exchange of culture with my guests. Join me to explore some of the best non-touristy local experiences in Singapore. I will show you the tips and recommendations that only locals know.
