A gentle immersion in the infinite offerings of the natural world. Forest Therapy, also known as “Shinrin-Yoku,” refers to the practice of spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health, happiness, and a sense of awe. The Japanese words translate into English as “Forest Bathing” and refer to bathing in the beneficial compounds which trees emit, such as oxygen and phytoncides. But as the American naturalist John Muir wrote, we also bathe in "spirit-beams, turning round and round, as if warming at a camp-fire... until [we] blend with the landscape and become part and parcel of nature". (https://vimeo.com/245324268) Why do you need a guide?: While it’s true that no one needs a guide to benefit from a walk in the natural world, a nature therapy guide can help unlock the door to new connection and intimacy with the environment by facilitating a series of invitations that cultivate presence, calm, and profound joy. Guides also create opportunities for people to connect with each other, to witness and be witnessed in their processes of discovery. This anchors experiences and helps to support lasting change. A useful analogy is perhaps a yoga teacher. We all can do yoga at home alone if we want, but sometimes being in the presence of a guide helps us go deeper.
I'm the founder of True to Seed Walks, George & Co. Theater, and a certified member of the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides. In many ways the forest has always been a part of my story -- as a guide, a playwright, and designer of edible food forests. My approach to forest therapy marries the collaborative, improvisatory sensibility of ensemble-created theater with the mindful presence and gentle pace of the forest therapy tradition.
