We'll hike one of my all-time favorite hikes, Chamisa trail. This is a gorgeous 2.5 mile loop trail through Rocky Mountain juniper, Ponderosa Pines and Douglas Firs. Depending on the season there's also a creek that we'll follow -- this year it's been running since spring and the whole forest is lush with all the rain. It's a moderate hike, one that most people can do even if coming from sea level. It has a 600 ft. elevation gain, starting at 7,800 and going up to 8,400 feet. It's challenging enough to get your heart going, with enough flat spots to catch your breath. At the halfway point we'll go off-trail to meditate at the community medicine wheel, where you can add your own touch to this beautiful space. This is an area that most Santa Feans don't even know about and it's a lovely place to take a moment and let the beauty of the land fully penetrate our hearts and bodies. Throughout our hike, I'll weave together ecology and psychology (born of my ecotherapy interest) and use nature as a lens for us to look at our lives and things that may be challenging at the moment. I also love to share the history of the area, particularly that of the Native American tribes of New Mexico (I was born on the Navajo/Dine reservation and work with a number of Dine friends when bringing guests to Canyon de Chelly).
Hi nature-lovers! I’m Cheryl, a small-business-owner-turned-outdoor-leader based in Santa Fe. I co-founded Lead Feather as a way to create deep experiences in nature for personal growth and collective healing. I love helping people connect with nature, and I’ve seen how beautiful, powerful, and fun it can be. Being in the trees and mountains can help us rediscover our place in the world, feel more grounded and present, and reconnect with the people and dreams that are most important to us. I've guided hundreds of people—including many newcomers to nature—on camping trips, hikes, solos, vision quests, creativity programs, talking circles, and other adventures. I'm trained in wilderness first aid, CPR, and ecotherapy, and I have a permit with the Santa Fe National Forest that allows me to take groups into these beautiful wooded mountains.
Acerca de la organización
Lead Feather (www.leadfeather.org) is a nonprofit founded in 2008 to help heal the separation between people and mother earth, in part through partnerships with Native American healers and firekeepers. We bring people into nature for hikes, meditation, art, conversation, ceremony, and silence. We work with Ojibwa, Diné (Navajo), Kenyan, and other partners to create bridges between cultures.
Esta es una experiencia solidaria: el 100% de tu pago se destina a Lead Feather.

The Santa Fe National Forest is only ten minutes from the plaza but is a true mountain wilderness: fresh, pinon-scented air; beautiful views of the three mountain ranges; and of course fabulous hikes. Chamisa trail is one of my all-time favorites, lined with ponderosas and steep-sided ravines. The trail is only moderately difficult, and there's a medicine wheel off-trail on a ridge-line where we'll stop and meditate midway through.
