The Tenderloin: Authenticity Untouched

For the faint of heart, the Tenderloin is often a neighborhood warned to stray from. Its discerning character bares its bad reputation like an ill-advised tattoo placed on a coed's lower back. I've lived in the Tenderloin area for roughly three years now and despite its coarse exterior and obvious points of "shadiness"– its quite a discovery once you give it try, sort of like kale.

There are hidden gems lurking in every corner, from the array of ethnic restaurants to the historical music venues of yore, to the loquacious characters that live on the street. A rare neighborhood where gentrification and redevelopment has not yet seeped and succeeded in bringing lavish businesses, there still lives a spirit of a neighborhood with roots from its past.

Walking through the neighborhood, you can find a coffee shop specializing in vegan treats and local roasts, a brunch spot serving beignets and southern fares, a bar set in prohibition times, and art galleries showcasing local artists all within the same block. The city's hustle and bustle is amplified come nighttime, where bar-hoppers, foodies, hipsters alike congregate and revel in vices.

If you don't mind the grit, grime, and occasional unmentionable excrement on the sidewalk, explore and discover one of San Francisco's most authentic and diverse neighborhoods; just watch your step.
